Orris Root

Olfactive Family: Floral

It is the root of the iris flower “Iris Pallida”, almost exclusively cultivated for perfumery in Tuscany, Italy. The rhizome (root) is harvested and stored in warm cellars. As it dries, a natural isolate called “irone” forms inside and the longer it dries the more irone is produced. This maturation takes about 3 to 5 years and 500 kg of iris roots produce only 1 kg of concrete, also referred to as ‘orris root butter’ or ‘butter of iris’, making it a highly prized substance. Its’ scent has a floral violet tone and a warm, creamy, earthy quality with a powdery, woody and leathery effect.
