Are you a “Niche” perfume brand ?

We are a Perfume House and not just a brand: we create everything ourselves in our Lab. We think of ourselves as part of an “Alternative Perfumery” movement. The Society of Scent follows the principle that defines a true perfume house: Scent Creation and Creative Direction stays in-house. Would you go to a restaurant without its own Chef? We are obsessed with quality, differentiation and emotional connections. Since it is difficult to design a luxurious experience in today’s cluttered marketplace, we created our own curated online shop to protect our brand identity, but are open to partnerships with selected retailers.

Where do your fragrance ingredients come from?

Our ingredients come from all over the world through the best brokers. We select them for their superior olfactory qualities (their odor…). We think that, just as for cooking, the quality of the final product depends on the quality of each individual ingredient in the recipe.

What is the difference between scent, fragrance and perfume?

In the general context, none… Scent is the most generic term, and we use it a lot, as fragrance and perfume can sometimes have a more traditional connotation. Technically a perfume is a highly concentrated product.

How do I choose the best scent for me?

Scent is a matter of taste, and that is very subjective. This is why we highly recommend that you take the time to experience the product before you commit to buying a full bottle. We advocate the Slow Scent movement where both the Consumer and the Product are given time to work together, breathe and develop a long term relationship, delivering pleasure and empowerment. Our Discovery Set is a tool for you to experience our collection at home, on your own terms, on your own time, and surrounded by your chosen entourage.

Where should I apply my scent?

You can choose to spray it anywhere on yourself or on your clothes. Typically, the neck, the wrists and the hair are areas that provide a great fragrance experience for you and others, leaving a nice scented sillage anywhere you’ve been.

Why is perfume so expensive?

Perfume is really not expensive when you put things in perspective. A good quality fragrance you love, empowers you every time you wear it. It makes you feel better, stronger, more assertive, more beautiful.  A bottle lasts a long time, and the experience of the right fragrance goes a long way. Compare it to other items you may buy for a similar price, and let us know which ones have the ability to transform you that much and transport you that far… This being said, only the right fragrance, created with the best quality ingredients, will succeed at triggering such powerful emotions. It takes a lot of artistry and manual labor to capture beauty from nature and science, and transform it into a masterpiece. At the Society of Scent, the cost of goods of our products is tenfold today’s industry standards. We take great pride in making sure the “juice” represents our biggest expense. More expensive does not always mean better, but for sure, these days, the money spent on “the juice” by your mainstream fragrance brand does not allow much space for beautiful, rich and tenacious ingredients to be part of the formula!

How long will an opened bottle last?

This depends on the specific ingredients in the formula and environmental factors. Perfumes and fragrances can keep their olfactory integrity for an average of two to five years but an almost empty bottle will oxidize faster than a full one because it contains more air. Oxygen, heat and light are conducive to the ingredients’ oxidation which alters the odor of the fragrance, especially the top notes, which are the first ones to go bad. There are no health risks associated with wearing an oxidized fragrance but it will smell funny, especially the first minutes!

Are fragrances safe ?

Yes, fragrance products are safe. The Fragrance Industry worldwide is regulated by The International Fragrance Association (IFRA), an organization created in 1973. IFRA establishes the standards for fragrance materials, limiting or prohibiting the use of ingredients, based on the findings of  The Research Institute for Fragrance Materials, Inc. (RIFM). RIFM is a non profit corporation created in 1966 and stands as the international scientific authority for the safe use of fragrance materials. All our products are formulated to comply with the most recent IFRA standards and regulations. IFRA certificates for our products are available upon request at info@thesocietyofscent.com.

What about allergies?

Like certain food ingredients, fragrance materials may trigger allergies even when they come directly from nature. In fact, the highest number of potential allergens are in essential oils! It is practically impossible to create an allergen-free/100% natural fragrance. There is a lot of misinformation on this subject, and the bottom line is that if you notice rashes on your skin when using a particular fragrance, you should either spray it exclusively on your clothes or stop using it. If the allergic reaction is respiratory, common sense dictates that you stop using the product, and maybe even stop wearing any type of fragrance, as there is no good way to anticipate which fragrance is going to trigger an allergy or not. The unfortunate truth is that you being allergic is not necessarily a problem with the way the product is designed or the quality and safety of its materials.  One of our client found a very comprehensive  article on the subject that you may want to review at perfume.com. To dive deeper into the subject of Safety as it pertains to allergies, The European Commission has made it mandatory for any brand sold in Europe to label 26 recognized allergens present in a scented product and although we sell our brands in the US only, we have decided to follow this policy and label every product in the  SO SCENT° line accordingly.
